Artist’s Statement
Rarely does a painting turn out the way it started in my head, but when I’m finished, the bold color, high contrast, and simple pattern always make me happy.
Oil paints not only smell good, which is essential to a sensory seeker like me, but their creaminess and slow drying time allows me to push the paint around and work with it until I get it just right. I choose no particular subject matter but paint what is interesting and inspires me at the moment and I don’t adhere to a strict painting code of etiquette. By using saturated and adventurous color in somewhat traditional or abstract subject matter, the viewer is wowed but can still relate and understand the work.
I hope my style will continue to loosen and become even more outgoing and exciting. I want someone to walk up to my work and recognize it as mine because of the way I use color and outline, which make it pop. At a showing of mine once I heard someone say, “these are happy paintings.” That works for me!
